Why chilled.beer exists

A silly domain, a rotating gallery of cold beers with decent views, and a countdown to 5pm - because some things deserve a little appreciation.

Why chilled.beer exists

I own chilled.beer.

That sentence still makes me grin. When .beer showed up as a TLD, it was one of those rare domain moments where the joke and the product are the same word. I did not need a business plan. I needed to buy it before someone else did, and figure out later what belonged on it.

What belonged on it turned out to be simple: photos of properly cold beers, sometimes with a view worth keeping, sometimes just the glass itself looking like it has earned the right to exist. Not a review site. Not a brewery blog. Just a place to put a nice cold beer so it gets a bit of appreciation somewhere other than the camera roll.

Beer o'clock

The site is linked from my portfolio - the little glass icon next to the usual links. Hit refresh and you get another beer. There is also a countdown to 5pm every day, labelled for what it is: beer o'clock.

No, I am not an alcoholic, and no, I do not drink every night. I do like a nice cold beer. In a world with a lot going on - work clusters, home labs, printers, tickets, noise - that small ritual is something to be grateful for. The countdown is half joke, half reminder that the day does end, and that ending can include something simple and good.

Why bother making it

Most of the internet is either useful or loud. chilled.beer is neither, on purpose. It is a tiny public shelf for moments that would otherwise die in a photo library: condensation on the glass, a skyline, a quiet table, a pint that looked better than the week around it.

I upload when I feel like it, sometimes. That is part of the point - the site does not have a schedule and it just has to be there when there is a beer worth posting, and random enough on refresh that visiting it feels like opening the fridge door and seeing what is cold today.

The domain did half the work

Naming things is usually the hard part. Here the TLD did the marketing. chilled.beer is the whole pitch in two words. Buying it was the commitment; building a small site around rotating photos and a 5pm clock was the excuse to use it for something that matched the name.

If you land on it from the portfolio, stay for one refresh, laugh at the countdown, and leave - that is still a successful visit. If you come back when you have a beer that needs somewhere nicer than Messages to live, even better.

Some projects are infrastructure. This one is gratitude with a glass in it.

F***ing love a cold beer...
